Phuket

Phuket is best for nightlife, luxury resorts, families wanting all-inclusive options, and shopping enthusiasts. As a larger island, it has significantly more infrastructure than Krabi, with an international airport receiving direct flights from cities around the world. Patong Beach serves as the main party hub, making Phuket particularly well-suited for first-time Thailand visitors who want convenience and variety. The trade-off is that Phuket tends to be more expensive overall compared to the mainland.

Krabi

Krabi is best for rock climbing, island hopping, budget travellers, and nature lovers. The province has a more laid-back and authentically local feel, with Railay Beach — accessible only by boat — standing out as one of Thailand's most spectacular natural settings. Krabi also serves as the gateway to Koh Phi Phi, Koh Lanta, and the Hong Islands. While the airport is smaller, it's well-connected domestically, and you'll consistently find better value for money here than in Phuket.
