    The Perfect 7-Day Thailand Itinerary

One week in Thailand is enough to experience the best of the country — bustling Bangkok, cultural Chiang Mai, and a tropical island. This itinerary balances temples, food, adventure, and beach time.

Day 1–2: Bangkok — The Electrifying Capital

Day 1: Temples & Street Food

Start your trip at the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew (฿500 entry, open 8:30am — arrive early to beat the crowds). Then walk to Wat Pho to see the magnificent 46-metre reclining Buddha (฿200 entry). Cross the river by ferry for just ฿4 to reach Wat Arun, where the sunset views over the Chao Phraya River are unforgettable.

In the evening, head to Yaowarat Road (Chinatown) for what many consider the best street food in the world. Must-try dishes include charcoal-grilled seafood, wok-fried Pad Thai, and mango sticky rice. Budget ฿200–400 for an incredible feast.

Day 2: Markets & Rooftop Bars

Spend the morning exploring Chatuchak Weekend Market (Saturday and Sunday, with over 15,000 stalls) or the trendy Jodd Fairs which operates daily. Shop for Thai souvenirs, handmade clothes, and local art.

In the afternoon, take the BTS to Siam for air-conditioned mall shopping, or explore the hipster cafés and craft cocktail bars of Thonglor — Bangkok's coolest neighbourhood.

End the day with sundowners at a rooftop bar. Sky Bar at Lebua is the iconic choice (featured in The Hangover Part II), Octave at Marriott Sukhumvit offers 360-degree views, and Vertigo at Banyan Tree features a dramatic open-air setting 61 floors above the city.

Bangkok budget: ฿2,500–4,000 per day for a mid-range experience.

Where to stay: Sukhumvit (Asok or Phrom Phong) offers the best BTS Skytrain access. Book hotels via Agoda for the best Bangkok rates.

Day 3–4: Chiang Mai — Mountains & Temples

Getting there: Take the 1-hour 15-minute flight from Bangkok (from ฿800 on AirAsia). For a bucket-list experience, take the overnight sleeper train departing on Day 2 evening.

Day 3: Old City & Doi Suthep

Rent a scooter for ฿200 per day or join a songthaew tour of the Old City temples — Wat Chedi Luang, Wat Phra Singh, and Wat Chiang Man are all within walking distance of each other and span 700 years of Lanna history.

In the afternoon, drive or take a songthaew up to Doi Suthep temple, climbing 309 steps (or taking the cable car) to the golden chedi at the summit. The panoramic views over Chiang Mai from the top are breathtaking. Entry costs just ฿30.

For dinner, find a restaurant serving Khao Soi — Chiang Mai's legendary curry noodle soup. Khao Soi Khun Yai is widely considered the best bowl in the city.

    Day 4: Elephants & Cooking

Spend the morning at Elephant Nature Park (฿2,500 for a full day), where you can walk with, feed, and bathe rescued elephants. This is an ethical sanctuary — no riding, no shows, just genuine interaction with these gentle giants.

In the afternoon, take a Thai cooking class (from ฿900) where you'll learn to make Pad Thai, Green Curry, Tom Yum, and Mango Sticky Rice. Most classes include a visit to a local market to select fresh ingredients.

End the evening at the Night Bazaar or with rooftop drinks along Nimmanhaemin Road.

Chiang Mai budget: ฿1,800–3,500 per day mid-range.

    Day 5–7: Island Paradise

Choose your island based on your travel style:

Option A: Phuket + Phi Phi (party & beaches)

Fly from Bangkok or Chiang Mai to Phuket in 1–1.5 hours, from ฿1,000. Base yourself in Kata Beach for a family-friendly vibe or Patong for nightlife.

On Day 5, arrive and soak up the beach before exploring colourful Phuket Old Town. Day 6 is for the Phi Phi Islands day trip — snorkelling at Maya Bay, swimming with tropical fish, and a beach lunch on Phi Phi Don, from ฿1,800. On Day 7, take a Phang Nga Bay kayaking tour through limestone karsts and sea caves, passing James Bond Island along the way.

    Option B: Koh Samui (all-rounder)

Fly to Koh Samui in 1 hour from Bangkok (from ฿3,000 on Bangkok Airways) or take the cheaper route via Surat Thani plus ferry for ฿800–1,500. Book combined tickets via our transport portal.

Arrive on Day 5 and settle into your beach resort before watching sunset at Fisherman's Village in Bophut. Day 6 is for the Ang Thong National Marine Park day trip — kayaking, snorkelling, and a viewpoint hike over the archipelago, from ฿2,500. On Day 7, beach-hop between Chaweng, Lamai, and the Big Buddha temple.

Option C: Krabi + Railay (adventure & nature)

Fly to Krabi in 1.5 hours from Bangkok (from ฿1,000), then take a longtail boat to Railay Beach for just ฿100 and 15 minutes of stunning scenery.

Day 5 on Railay means kayaking to Phra Nang Beach Cave and trying your hand at rock climbing (from ฿1,000). Day 6 features the famous 4 Islands tour visiting Koh Poda, Tup Island, Chicken Island, and Phra Nang (from ฿1,000). Day 7 takes you inland to the Emerald Pool and Hot Springs hidden in the Krabi jungle, finishing with sunset drinks at Ao Nang.

Island budget: ฿2,500–5,000 per day mid-range.

    Essential Tips

Book transport early — trains and popular ferries sell out, especially in peak season from December to February. Get travel insurance — Thai hospitals are excellent but expensive without coverage. Download Grab — it's Southeast Asia's Uber and essential for getting fair taxi prices. Carry cash — many street stalls and small businesses remain cash-only. Pack light — you'll buy clothes in Thailand because they're cheaper and often better quality. Respect temples — always cover your shoulders and knees, and remove your shoes before entering.
